Digital Media Evolution
Storytelling in the Age of AI Slop: What the 2026 Midterms Reveal About Modern Media Strategy
In production, storytelling has always been about leverage: taking a message, putting it into a compelling narrative, and delivering it through the most effective channels. Having worked directly on campaign production, including the recent race for Wisconsin’s 3rd Congressional District supporting Rebecca Cooke. I have seen firsthand how fast the digital landscape is moving.
Between 2022 and the 2026 midterm cycle, political spending exploded to a projected $11.6 billion (up 30% from $8.9 billion in 2022). While I am not a media buyer, though I routinely collaborate with media placement teams when execution demands it, my work centers on brand narrative and content production.
When media ecosystems shift, the way we produce and protect stories must change with them.
Connected TV (CTV): Hyper-Targeted Storytelling at Scale
Connected TV (CTV) refers to internet-connected devices that stream video to television screens, including Smart TVs, Roku, Apple TV, and Fire Sticks. Back in 2022, campaigns used digital channels like TikTok and short-form video primarily for experimental youth outreach. By 2026, streaming and CTV transformed into precision tools. Broadcast TV still commands nearly half of total political spending (about 48%), but CTV allows producers to serve high-frequency, long-form video to specific households rather than buying broad, expensive media markets.
For brands and commercial producers, CTV bridge the gap between broadcast authority and digital data targeting.
From TikTok Experiments to Multi-Platform Infrastructure
Digital media production in 2026 relies on clear channel differentiation:
Meta (Facebook/Instagram): Built for rapid-response visuals, local mobilization, micro-targeted messaging, and community fundraising.
YouTube: Acts as the primary digital broadcast standard for high-production narrative video, long-form explainers, and broad reach.
Connected TV: Delivers cinematic, high-trust video directly into living rooms with zip-code-level targeting.

The Production and Legal Defense Against "AI Slop"
The shift from 2022 to 2026 isn't just about media buying; it is about narrative manipulation.
During our campaign in WI-03, incumbent Rep. Derrick Van Orden repeatedly posted AI-generated "deepfake" videos featuring a synthetic version of Rebecca Cooke put into fictional scenarios. The videos altered her voice and likeness to distribute misleading attack messaging.
In response, our team took direct action: issuing a formal cease-and-desist letter and filing an ethics complaint over the use of deceptive synthetic media.
Opposition posts synthetic AI video altering candidate speech/likeness
Production response: Challenge authenticity and reinforce grounded messaging
Legal action: Issue Cease & Desist and file state ethics complaint
When bad actors deploy synthetic media to manufacture narrative, brand authenticity becomes your primary asset. True storytellers must protect the integrity of the message.
The Data Behind AI Ad Spending
Recent research by the Wesleyan Media Project found that political advertisers spent over $137 million on AI-generated ads leading up to the 2026 midterms.
The study highlights a clear strategic divide: conservative and Republican-aligned campaigns account for the vast majority of AI-generated video and image spending.
From a production standpoint, the logical reason for this disparity comes down to campaign posture:
Satire & Disruption: Conservative messaging frequently relies on satire, exaggerated pop-culture memes, and disruptive visual tropes, where synthetic images fit naturally.
Brand & Regulatory Caution: Democratic campaigns and traditional brand producers often face stricter internal compliance standards and brand risk concerns, leading teams to focus on authentic, real-world footage over generated graphics.
How This Applies to Your Business Brand
Whether running a political campaign or shaping corporate messaging, producing authentic video content that cuts through synthetic noise is critical.
